About the Friends

Buy A Bookmark, Support The Library! Where would we be without our Friends? 'Friends of the Library' is a national organization devoted to supporting local libraries. The Friends branches of the Huntsville - Madison County Public Library provide countless volunteer hours and fund raising activities that help make our library great.

The bookmark symbolizes the Friends' dedication to the libraries and the public they serve. Are you interested in making a difference at a library you love? You can join at any of our branches. Your yearly membership dues will help fund programming and equipment purchases at the library you joined at. Ask any librarian for more information!

Avoid late fees!

Still need a perk? Provide us your email address when you sign up for a Friends membership, and you'll automatically get reminder emails a few days before your materials are due. Never let a due date sneak up on you again!

Stay up-to-date

Friends members have two extra ways to stay informed. Our Cover to Cover mailing gives you library news and lists of upcoming scheduled events. We also offer a Friends email list. This low-traffic, zero-spam list is great for reminders about book sales and other Friends events. Rest assured: we want you to remain a Friend, so your email address is confidential and never shared with anyone. Period.

Donations Accepted

The Friends of the Library Bookstore accepts books, magazines (preferably the past 3 months or vintage only), CDs, DVDs, and more.  Items not sold in the bookstore are recycled or donated.

Recipes by Request from the Friends Picnic!

Curry Artichoke Rice Salad

This is from the Arab Mothers' Club "Simple Pleasures" cookbook

2 cups chicken broth (I use one)
1 cup rice
1/4 cup diced green onion
1/4 cup pimentos
2 (6-ounce) jars artichoke hearts, drained
1/2 cup mayonnaise
1/2 teaspoon curry powder
1 teaspoon dill
1 (8-ounce) can water chestnuts, drained

Cook rice in chicken broth. Cool sllightly, add remaining ingredients, cover and chill.

SUNSHINE SALAD

1 small pkg.* each of lemon & orange Jell-O
2 cups boiling water
1 ½ cups cold water
2 bananas, diced
40 small marshmallows
1 can (#2) crushed pineapple

*can use either regular or sugar free Jell-O
(I used the sugar free in the one for the FOL’s picnic)

Dissolve both packages of Jell-O in boiling water; add cold water and let cool until consistency of an unbeaten egg white. Drain pineapple, saving juice. Add pineapple, bananas, and marshmallows to the thickened Jell-O and pour into large 9 x 13 inch pan. Chill until firm.

TOPPING

1 egg, beaten
1 tablespoon cream of tartar
2 tablespoons butter
½ cup granulated sugar
1 cup pineapple juice
1 cup heavy cream, whipped
½ cup shredded sharp cheese

Combine cream of tartar and sugar in a small sauce pan. Add the beaten egg, butter, and pineapple juice. Cook, stirring over low heat, until thick. Let mixture cool, and then fold in whipped cream. Spread topping over the chilled gelatin. Sprinkle cheese over the top. Cut into serving sizes of your choice. ENJOY!
